Bulgarian MEPs all backbenchers?

The hemicyle of the European Parliament in Strasbourg [Wikipedia]

By Georgi Gotev

My colleague blogger Emanuele Bonini writes that despite the terrible political situation in Italy, his compatriots can be proud that the new European Parliament President is Italian, and another Italian succeeded to be Vice President, even though he doesn’t belong to any political group.

Well done Italy! Bravissimi!

Bulgaria is the opposite case.

Sergei Stanishev didn’t become European Parliament President although his name was part of a package agreed by EU heads of state and government (he claims he withdrew his candidacy himself). In parallel 14 European Parliament Vice Presidents were elected, but there is no Bulgarian among them. Not even Stanishev.

Will Bulgaria be more successful in terms of Chairs of the 20 European Parliament Committees and sub-committees?
